  • St. Anna's Church in Annaberg-Buchholz

St. Anna's Church is one of the most important ecclesiastical buildings of Germany and contains a particularly valuable interior design with many works of art made by masters such as Hans Hesse, Peter Breuer and Hans Witten. The church is in 5 minutes walking distance from the Hotel Wilder Mann. www.annenkirche.de

  • Bergkirche St. Marien in Annaberg

  • St. Wolfgang's Church, Schneeberg

The largest hall church of Upper Saxony is also known as "Bergmannsdom" (miners' cathedral). Details particularly worth seeing include the winged altar made by Lucas Cranach major, and the large Jehmlich organ. www.schneeberg.de

  •  Freiberg Cathedral

Freiberg Cathedral is of first-class importance in terms of culture and art history. With its Golden Portal and tulip-shaped pulpit, this cathedral is one of the most splendid in Saxony. www.freiberger-dom.en

  • Schloss Schlettau

The only castle within our district. Initially built as a fort, it was later used as the office of the Commissioner of Game and Forests and even as a spinning-mill. Today you can find here a restored hall of knights, a museum, a passaments workshop, a pottery and a demonstration workshop. www.schloss-schlettau.en 

  • Schloss Augustusburg

This impressive renaissance building was erected in the 16th century as a hunting lodge for Kurfürst August. Today it houses a number of interesting museums and, with Europe's largest bike collection, it is considered as a mecca for bikers. www.die-sehenswerten-drei.de 

  • Burg Scharfenstein

Discover a comprehensive collection of Erzgebirge folk art within the mediaeval walls. In the "Erlebnisburg" (event castle), you might meet the old local hero Karl Stülpner who was born in Scharfenstein. www.die-sehenswerten-drei.de

  •  Schloss Schwarzenberg

The castle and the neighbouring St. George's church define the silhouette of the city, which is also called the Pearl of the Erzgebirge. The keep of the castle dates back to a 12th century fortress. www.schwarzenberg.de

You can slow down ... with our railways and their museums

  • Pressnitztal railway

Prior to its closing in 1984, the track of the museum railway Jöhstadt-Steinbach ran on to Wolkenstein. Nowadays, extra tours are organised with original Saxon rolling stock on a track length of 6.5 km. www.pressnitztalbahn.de

  • Fichtelberg railway

Fichtelberg railway, which has been in operation since 1897, connects Cranzahl and the health resort Oberwiesenthal, the highest-located German city. www.bvo.de/bahn

  • Schwarzenberg railway museum

  • Saxon narrow-gauge railway museum
